The Port of Belize in collaboration with the Belize Port Operators assisted in the salvaging of MV 3 Queens at the Low Berth. This vessel was detained by the Belize Port Authority (BPA) as it was deemed to be unsafe, however it was kept afloat by pumping continuously. The master of the vessel was ordered to discontinue pumping as the bilge water was contaminated. As a result of this action the vessel sank over the weekend of October 10 & 11. Initial attempts were made to float the vessel on Oct 13 but was unsuccessful, however on October 15 it was successfully floated and towed to the entrance to the low berth, and placed partially on land. The rear of the vessel sank once again and the owners were served notice once again by the BPA to remove the vessel or pay a huge penalty. The vessel was then successfully beached after intensive effors. Normally its all in a day’s work at the Port, but in this case it took a couple of days thereby saving the owner from paying huge penalties to the BPA.
